Chicago, IL – Drivers across Illinois and Indiana are facing slick and dangerous conditions this morning as black ice forms on untreated roads following overnight cold temperatures.
Transportation officials and weather forecasters are urging caution, especially for commuters in the Chicago metro area and northwest Indiana, where multiple minor crashes and fender benders have been reported since early morning.
Black ice forms when moisture on roadways freezes, creating a thin, nearly invisible layer of ice that can cause sudden loss of traction. Unlike packed snow, black ice is transparent, blending in with the dark pavement underneath.
Motorists are advised to reduce speeds, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking. Overpasses, bridges, and shaded rural roads are especially prone to icing.
Conditions are expected to improve later this morning as temperatures rise above freezing, but early commuters should remain alert and drive defensively.
