Chicago, IL – Much of the Midwest is now under a broad weather alert as a lineup of Alberta Clippers may bring pop-up snowstorms every other day from Saturday, December 7, through Friday, December 13, according to early forecasts. The pattern may disrupt travel across Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a strong northwest-flow pattern will guide several quick-moving disturbances out of western Canada into the heart of the Midwest. These systems—often called the “Clipper Express”—can produce sudden bursts of snow, patchy blowing snow, and rapid temperature drops.

The first disturbance is expected Saturday night, with additional clippers likely to follow in 48-hour intervals. While snowfall totals remain uncertain, forecasters warn that even short-lived bursts may create slick conditions along major travel corridors, including I-55, I-65, I-70, I-80, I-90, and I-94.

Meteorologists say the exact path of each clipper will determine which areas see accumulation. The northern tier—Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan—could see enhanced snowfall and lake-effect boosts behind each system. Further south, cities including Chicago, Indianapolis, Des Moines, St. Louis, Columbus, and Milwaukee may experience fast-forming snow showers capable of slowing commutes.

Forecasters caution that clippers can shift track and intensity quickly, meaning day-to-day updates will be essential throughout the December 7–13 window. Impacts may include sudden reductions in visibility, brief whiteouts, and rapid pavement icing.

The NWS urges Midwest residents to monitor local forecasts as details refine with each approaching disturbance.
