Chicago, Illinois – A dangerous severe weather setup is unfolding across the Midwest right now, with storms expected to intensify rapidly this afternoon and threaten millions from Missouri to Michigan.
According to the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, severe thunderstorms are expected to develop by mid-afternoon across eastern Iowa, northern Illinois, and southern Wisconsin before expanding east into Indiana and Michigan through the evening. The primary window for the most dangerous storms will occur this afternoon into the evening commute.
Damaging winds are the biggest concern, with some storms capable of producing gusts exceeding 75 mph. A few tornadoes are also possible, and any that develop could reach EF-2 strength, especially in the enhanced risk zone stretching from near the Quad Cities through Chicago and into southern Wisconsin.
Cities including St. Louis, Davenport, Chicago, Milwaukee, and Detroit may see rapidly changing conditions, with storms moving northeast at high speeds. Major roadways like I-55, I-80, and I-94 could see sudden visibility drops, debris, and dangerous driving conditions.
Residents should secure outdoor items immediately and ensure multiple ways to receive warnings. Be prepared to take shelter quickly if warnings are issued, as storms may intensify with little lead time.
The severe threat will continue into tonight as storms push east, with additional watches and warnings likely across the region.
