Chicago, Illinois – Repeated rounds of rain could begin impacting travel and river levels across the Midwest early in April as a wetter-than-normal pattern settles over the region.

According to the Climate Prediction Center’s March 19 outlook, states including Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Missouri are likely to see precipitation totals up to 60% above normal through the month. That setup increases the risk for rising rivers, standing water on roads, and delays along major freight corridors.

Key routes like I-80, I-90, and I-70 could see periodic slowdowns during heavier rain events, particularly near Chicago, Detroit, Indianapolis, and Cleveland. Low-lying farmland across Iowa and Illinois may also face ponding issues, while parts of southern Missouri and Arkansas could see localized flash flooding after repeated storms.

Temperatures are expected to run above average across much of the region, speeding up soil saturation and limiting recovery time between systems. In northern areas like Wisconsin and Michigan, lingering snowpack melt could add to runoff concerns.

Drivers should avoid water-covered roads and allow extra travel time during rain events. Residents are urged to monitor river levels and clear drainage areas near homes.

This active pattern is expected to persist through April, with additional flood watches and advisories possible as multiple systems track across the Midwest.
