Chicago, Illinois – A widespread storm system is set to ignite across the Midwest Tuesday evening, bringing a multi-state threat for severe thunderstorms that could disrupt travel and power across a broad region.
According to the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, a large corridor of storms will develop late Tuesday afternoon and intensify into the evening, stretching from eastern Iowa and Missouri through Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and into Ohio. A slight risk (level 2 of 5) is in place across parts of Illinois, Indiana, and southern Michigan, with a broader marginal risk extending across more than a dozen states.
Cities including Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit, Indianapolis, Des Moines, and Toledo are all within the storm zone. Storms are expected to produce wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail around 1 inch in diameter, especially along major corridors like I-80, I-90, and I-94.
The storm line is expected to organize quickly after 4 p.m. Tuesday, with the greatest impacts during the evening commute and into the overnight hours. Heavy downpours may reduce visibility to under one mile and create slick road conditions across urban areas.
Residents should prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions, secure outdoor items, and monitor alerts closely Tuesday evening. Storm chances continue into Tuesday night, with additional updates likely as the system evolves.
