Sioux City, Iowa – A fast-moving line of severe thunderstorms could slam parts of northwest Iowa, northeast Nebraska, and southeast South Dakota with 80 mph wind gusts and hail up to 2 inches in diameter through 3 a.m. Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch No. 470 is now in effect as a potent storm cluster continues moving southeast from the Mitchell, South Dakota area toward Sioux City, Iowa. The system has a history of producing destructive winds and large hail.

Communities along and within 45 miles north and south of a line from Mitchell to just northeast of Sioux City should brace for power outages, falling trees, and dangerous driving conditions on I-29, U.S. 20, and local highways. The strongest winds may knock down power lines or cause property damage in exposed areas.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects, stay indoors away from windows, and avoid unnecessary travel overnight. High-profile vehicles should delay travel until winds subside.

This storm system is part of a broader severe weather pattern impacting the northern Plains this weekend. Additional watches and warnings remain active across the region.

Stay weather-aware overnight. Warnings may be issued quickly as storms intensify.
