Chicago, IL – A newly discovered green comet is streaking across the Illinois sky, and stargazers still have a few days left to catch it before it fades from view.

Known as C/2025 F2 (SWAN), the comet is visible through binoculars and can currently be seen shortly after sunset, especially in areas with minimal light pollution. It appears low in the western sky, near the constellation Pegasus, and will remain visible until Monday, April 14.

The comet was co-discovered in late March by Australian amateur astronomer Michael Mattiazzo using imagery from the SWAN (Solar Wind Anisotropies) instrument on NASA and the European Space Agency’s SOHO spacecraft. The International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center has since confirmed its official designation.

Though its glow may appear faint, spotting C/2025 F2 (SWAN) offers a unique chance to witness a cosmic visitor not seen before—and may not return for thousands of years.
