Omaha, NE – A powerful winter storm is set to hit parts of Nebraska and Iowa late Tuesday into Wednesday, bringing blizzard conditions, heavy snow, and dangerous winds up to 65 mph. Travel is expected to be treacherous, with whiteout conditions likely in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service, a Blizzard Warning is in effect from 8 p.m. Tuesday to 3 a.m. Wednesday for portions of southwest Iowa and east-central Nebraska, including Omaha, Council Bluffs, and Nebraska City. Snowfall totals of 1 to 5 inches are expected, but strong winds will create significant blowing and drifting snow. Flash freezing is also a concern, as temperatures rapidly drop behind the system.

High Wind Warning is also in place from 3 p.m. Tuesday through noon Wednesday. Winds from the northwest will range from 35 to 45 mph, with gusts reaching 65 mph. These conditions could lead to widespread power outages, downed trees, and hazardous driving conditions on major roadways, including Interstate 80 and Highway 34.

What to Expect Next

Wednesday: Morning snow tapering off, but blowing snow and gusty winds up to 50 mph will persist. High near 36°F.

Thursday: Partly cloudy with a chance of rain/snow mix. High around 43°F.

Friday: Another chance of rain and snow before noon, then clearing. High near 39°F.

Saturday: Sunny and milder, high near 45°F.

Safety Tips

Residents are urged to stay indoors if possible, as visibility could drop to near zero during peak storm hours. If travel is necessary, carry an emergency kit, reduce speed, and allow extra stopping distance on icy roads. Make sure your car is winter-ready and fuel levels are adequate.
