Midwest Severe Weather: Storms With 2-Inch Hail and Tornadoes Threaten Chicago by 3 PM Thursday

Chicago, IL – Severe thunderstorms capable of producing large hail and tornadoes are expected to impact much of the Midwest, including Chicago, beginning Thursday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, scattered severe storms are forecast to develop across parts of the western Great Lakes and into the Midwest from approximately 3 p.m. through the evening on May 15. The greatest threat includes very large hail exceeding two inches in diameter, damaging wind gusts, and isolated tornadoes.

A broad area including northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin, eastern Iowa, northern Indiana, and parts of Ohio is under an enhanced risk for severe weather. Cities within the highest alert area include Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, and Fort Wayne. Minneapolis and Detroit are also expected to see strong storm potential.

Residents are urged to remain alert and check local forecasts and alerts throughout the day. Emergency officials recommend securing outdoor objects, charging devices, and reviewing severe weather plans. Travel delays, power outages, and property damage are possible during peak storm hours.

The severe threat may extend southwestward into Kentucky and Arkansas late Thursday evening. Thunderstorm activity is expected to diminish overnight.
