Chilton, WI – The Calumet County Sheriff’s Office is warning drivers to stay alert this fall as deer activity increases along rural roads. Officials say 138 car vs. deer crashes were reported across the county in 2024, though none resulted in injuries or fatalities.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Calumet County has seen a total of 2,912 deer-related crashes over the past 15 years. Those incidents have caused 53 injuries but, fortunately, no deaths. Deputies note that collisions tend to rise sharply during October and November, when deer are most active near highways and county roads.
Authorities are also reminding motorcyclists to take extra caution. Data shows there is roughly a 37% chance that a motorcycle–deer crash will result in a fatality or serious injury.
Officials urge all drivers to reduce speed in wooded areas, remain alert at dawn and dusk, and scan both sides of the road for wildlife. “Please slow down, avoid distractions, and scan the road ahead,” the Sheriff’s Office advised.
The department also released a crash density map highlighting areas with high numbers of deer strikes, including near Brillion, Chilton, and the eastern county line.
As fall continues, deputies say awareness is key to keeping Wisconsin roads safe.
