Cleveland, Ohio – An intense early-summer heatwave is set to grip the Midwest and Northeast next week, with temperatures nearing 100 degrees across much of Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and New York from June 22 to 26.
According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, there’s a 70% to 90% chance of above-normal temperatures for a wide swath of the region. Cities including Columbus, Indianapolis, Buffalo, and Pittsburgh are forecast to hit the upper 90s, with heat index values potentially climbing into the triple digits by Monday afternoon.
Health officials are urging residents to prepare now as prolonged exposure to extreme heat increases the risk of dehydration, heat stroke, and power disruptions. Urban areas may see added stress due to the heat island effect. Cooling centers should be identified in advance, and outdoor activity should be limited between noon and 6 p.m.
This stretch could mark one of the hottest late Junes on record in parts of the Ohio Valley and interior Northeast. Overnight lows may stay in the 70s, offering little relief for homes without air conditioning.
Additional heat advisories and potential air quality alerts are expected over the weekend as the heat builds.
