Indianapolis, Indiana – A punishing heat wave is gripping the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic, with extreme temperatures pushing heat index values near 110°F and offering little overnight relief through the end of the week.

According to the National Weather Service, Heat Warnings and Advisories stretch from Illinois through Pennsylvania, affecting nearly 160 million people. The most dangerous conditions are expected through Friday across the eastern Ohio Valley, where maximum daily heat risks are rated “Extreme” — the highest possible level.

Cities like Indianapolis, Columbus, Pittsburgh, and Washington, D.C. are seeing daily highs in the upper 90s with humidity driving real-feel temps into triple digits. Nighttime lows will struggle to fall below 80°F, especially in urban areas. This prolonged exposure increases the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for the elderly, outdoor workers, and those without access to air conditioning.

Officials urge residents to avoid strenuous activity during peak heat, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Cooling centers are opening in several counties, and power grids across the region may experience strain by midweek.

Warnings remain in effect through Saturday, with further advisories possible as the dangerous heat lingers.
