A significant winter storm is expected to sweep through the Midwest tonight, impacting eight states with freezing rain, ice accumulation, and hazardous travel. Areas from Iowa to Wisconsin and Missouri to Minnesota are under Ice Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories, with severe impacts likely Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain will begin late tonight across Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, and Minnesota, spreading into Wisconsin, Indiana, Kentucky, and Michigan by morning. Ice accumulations could reach 0.2 to 0.3 inches in many areas, with localized higher amounts. Gusty winds of up to 30 mph could lead to power outages as ice weighs down tree branches and utility lines.

Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly, especially on untreated roads and bridges. Residents in affected areas are strongly advised to avoid travel during the storm. Officials recommend preparing emergency kits with food, water, flashlights, and warm clothing in case of power outages or travel disruptions.

Temperatures will rise above freezing Saturday afternoon, allowing for gradual melting in southern areas. However, northern regions may remain at risk of icy conditions through the evening.

The five-day outlook predicts additional precipitation on Sunday, followed by a return to colder, drier conditions early next week. Midwest residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates and check local road conditions via 511 systems.
