Sioux Falls, SD – A High Wind Warning remains in effect through early Wednesday morning for much of South Dakota, extending into northwest Iowa and western Minnesota, where gusts up to 65 mph are creating dangerous travel and power outages, according to the National Weather Service offices in Aberdeen and Sioux Falls.
The warning covers dozens of counties including Beadle, Brown, Hughes, Codington, and Minnehaha in South Dakota, Lyon and Plymouth in Iowa, and Nobles and Murray in Minnesota. Winds are expected to remain between 25 and 40 mph with gusts occasionally exceeding 60 mph, before tapering off after sunrise.
Officials warn that these powerful northwest winds may down trees, power lines, and unsecured objects, leading to scattered outages across rural and urban areas. Motorists—especially those driving high-profile vehicles like semis and RVs—are urged to use extreme caution, as crosswinds on open highways may make steering difficult.
Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel, and report power outages to local utilities. Those on the road should slow down and be alert for fallen debris or blowing dust reducing visibility.
