Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Residents across South Dakota, southwest Minnesota, northeast Nebraska, and northwest Iowa face multiple days of dangerous heat starting Friday. An Extreme Heat Watch goes into effect, with heat index values potentially reaching 110 degrees Fahrenheit, particularly south of I-90.

According to the US National Weather Service Sioux Falls South Dakota, high temperatures will range from 90 to 105 degrees. The peak heat index, a measure of how hot it feels when humidity is factored in, could reach between 98 and 110 degrees. The hottest conditions are expected south of I-90 on Friday and Saturday, with limited relief overnight as lows remain in the 70s.

This prolonged heat poses a significant risk of heat-related illnesses for the entire population without protective action. Residents should stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, take frequent breaks in the shade or air-conditioned buildings, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day. Fans alone may not be adequate for cooling if air conditioning is unavailable.

Authorities urge everyone to check on elderly neighbors, young children, and pets, as they are more susceptible to heat-related stress. This heat event mirrors similar conditions seen in previous summer seasons, emphasizing the need for proactive safety measures.

The Extreme Heat Watch remains in effect through Sunday. Residents should monitor local weather updates for potential warnings and advisories as conditions evolve.
