Quad Cities, IA/IL – A sweltering heatwave is set to grip the Midwest late next week, with temperatures climbing into the upper 90s and oppressive humidity creating dangerous conditions across Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a high-risk zone for hazardous heat is expected to settle over the region from July 24 through July 30. Heat index values could soar well above 100°F, especially from Wednesday through Friday, impacting cities like Des Moines, Peoria, and St. Louis.
The Climate Prediction Center has issued a High Risk of Hazardous Temperatures for parts of eastern Iowa and western Illinois from July 24–25. A broader Moderate Risk area stretches from Kansas City to Indianapolis, signaling several days of dangerous heat stress conditions. Overnight lows may not dip below 75°F in urban areas, reducing the body’s ability to recover.
Power grid strain, heat-related illness, and outdoor work disruptions are likely. Emergency officials urge residents to limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, hydrate frequently, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Schools with summer programs and outdoor events may need to adjust schedules or move activities indoors.
Humidity levels are expected to rise sharply, particularly in southern Missouri and central Illinois, worsening the heat’s impact.
More advisories are expected early next week. Heat alerts could be expanded as temperatures climb.
