St. Louis, Missouri – A sweltering heatwave is set to grip the Midwest beginning July 21, bringing dangerous levels of heat and humidity to Missouri, southern Illinois, and western Kentucky through the end of next week.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, there is a 60% or greater chance of above-normal temperatures from July 21 to 27, combined with elevated humidity levels. That could push heat index values above 105°F—raising the risk of heat-related illnesses, power strain, and infrastructure stress across the region.

Cities including St. Louis, Cape Girardeau, Paducah, Carbondale, and Jefferson City could experience extreme afternoon heat from Sunday through next Saturday. Health officials urge residents to limit outdoor activity between 1 and 6 p.m., stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Local cooling centers may be activated if temperatures climb above 100°F.

Utility providers across the three-state region are preparing for increased electricity demand. Some municipalities may issue conservation notices during peak usage hours. Outdoor workers, delivery drivers, and event organizers should plan for frequent breaks and access to shade or AC.

Normal highs for this time of year range between 86°F and 90°F, but next week’s pattern could keep temperatures well above that, especially in urban corridors where overnight cooling is limited.

Additional heat advisories and excessive heat warnings may be issued this weekend as confidence in the event increases.
