Rensselaer, IN – The Rensselaer Fire Department is reminding residents to handle lithium-ion batteries with caution as Fire Prevention Week approaches in October.

According to the department, this year’s campaign, themed “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” will run from Oct. 5–11. Officials said the initiative, in partnership with State Farm and the National Fire Protection Association, is aimed at raising awareness about safe buying, charging, and recycling practices for batteries commonly used in smartphones, laptops, power tools and other electronics.

Lithium-ion batteries, if damaged or improperly used, can overheat, start fires, or even explode, fire officials said. Estel George, a representative for the department, said lithium-ion batteries are powerful and convenient but must be handled correctly to avoid hazards.

The Rensselaer Fire Department urged residents to follow three key safety steps:

  • Buy only listed products — check for nationally recognized safety certifications when purchasing items with lithium-ion batteries.
  • Charge devices safely — use only manufacturer-approved chargers, avoid charging on beds or couches, and never overcharge.
  • Recycle batteries responsibly — never dispose of lithium-ion batteries in the trash or standard recycling bins, as they can catch fire. Safe drop-off locations can be found at call2recycle.org.

Fire officials encourage the community to learn more about Fire Prevention Week programs in Rensselaer by contacting the fire department at 219-866-5040. Additional safety resources are available at fpw.org.
