Washington, D.C. – A powerful winter storm is expected to bring significant snow and ice from the central U.S. to the Mid-Atlantic starting late Tuesday, with hazardous travel conditions likely.

According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center, the storm will first impact the Central Plains and Midwest on Tuesday afternoon, bringing over 6 inches of snow to Kansas, Nebraska, and parts of the I-70 corridor. Southern regions, including Oklahoma and Missouri, will see a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain, making untreated roads treacherous.

By Tuesday night into Wednesday, the storm will shift eastward, bringing heavy snow to the Ohio Valley, Central Appalachians, and Mid-Atlantic states. The highest snowfall totals, exceeding 6 inches, are expected in West Virginia’s mountains and along the I-95 corridor from Richmond to Philadelphia.

long-duration freezing rain event is also possible in the Blue Ridge region of Virginia and North Carolina, with over 0.25 inches of ice forecast in some areas. This could lead to power outages and tree damage.

Residents in affected regions should prepare for hazardous driving conditions and possible delays. The system is expected to exit the East Coast by late Wednesday.
