Glen Elder, KS – Two small earthquakes were recorded near Waconda Lake in north-central Kansas early Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The first quake, a magnitude 3.2 event, struck at 2:25 a.m. just southeast of Glen Elder at a depth of 5 kilometers. The second, a 2.7-magnitude tremor, followed at 3:58 a.m. southwest of the town, also at a depth of 5 kilometers.

While Kansas is not a major seismic hotspot, minor earthquakes do occur occasionally. The USGS “Did You Feel It?” community intensity map recorded three reports of shaking from the stronger 3.2-magnitude quake.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Scientists note that some seismic activity in the central U.S. has been linked to wastewater injection from oil and gas operations.

Residents who experienced shaking are encouraged to report it to the USGS to assist with tracking regional seismic trends.
