Henry County, IL – The Henry County Sheriff’s Office is warning drivers of heightened deer activity during deer-mating season, which peaks from October to December. Drivers are urged to stay vigilant to avoid collisions.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, scanning for “eye shine” from headlights reflecting in deer eyes can help spot them early. Officials recommend reducing speed when deer are near and anticipating additional animals nearby.
Deer may unexpectedly stop on the road. If a collision is unavoidable, authorities advise drivers to avoid swerving into other lanes or leaving the roadway. Instead, aim to glance off the deer to minimize damage.
Motorists should pull over and activate hazard lights if they strike a deer. Do not approach or move the injured animal from the road. Call 911 for assistance.
With deer appearing in both rural and urban areas, staying cautious in known crossing zones can prevent accidents. Following these tips can ensure safer travel throughout deer-mating season.
