PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Morning fog blanketed much of Rhode Island early Monday, but skies are expected to clear quickly, giving way to sunshine and highs near 79°F by afternoon. The calm start to the week will give way to more unsettled conditions by midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Norton, patchy fog will dissipate by 9 a.m., followed by mostly sunny skies through Tuesday. Southwest winds will pick up to around 10 mph Tuesday afternoon before a band of showers moves in late Tuesday night into Wednesday. Rain could be moderate at times, with up to a quarter inch possible across Providence County and coastal areas.

By Wednesday evening, temperatures will fall into the low 40s as cooler, drier air moves in. Thursday and Friday look bright and crisp with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s — a classic fall pattern returning just in time for the weekend.

Drivers should watch for reduced visibility during early morning commutes Monday and Tuesday. Keep umbrellas handy midweek before clearing skies return Thursday.
