Columbia, S.C. – Scorching summer heat continues to grip central South Carolina, with dangerous conditions expected through Monday night as heat index values top 105°F in Columbia, Orangeburg, and surrounding Midlands cities.

According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, highs will climb into the mid to upper 90s, but humidity will push apparent temperatures well above 100°F, peaking at 105°F in Columbia, Orangeburg, and Lincolnton. Lancaster, Camden, and Sumter will also see heat indices from 102°F to 104°F. Rain chances remain slim, with only isolated showers and thunderstorms likely across the eastern Midlands late Monday.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and wear lightweight clothing. The oppressive heat could cause health risks, especially for children, seniors, and outdoor workers. Avoid strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours and never leave pets or children in vehicles.

This is one of the hottest stretches so far this July for South Carolina, with highs comparable to the 2022 heat wave. Some cooling is possible later this week as rain chances increase, but warnings remain in effect for now.

Stay tuned for updates, as heat advisories may be extended if high temperatures persist into Tuesday.
