Columbia, SC – South Carolina will see a big shift in weather over the next few days, with warm weekend conditions giving way to the coldest air of the season early next week.

According to the US National Weather Service Columbia, fog this morning will lift to mostly sunny skies today, with highs in the low to upper 70s. A weak cold front tonight could spark a few showers or thunderstorms, followed by another round of storms Saturday and Sunday as a stronger front approaches.

By Monday, much colder air will move in, sending daytime highs into the 40s and 50s and overnight lows below freezing across much of central South Carolina. The weather service warns that this freeze will likely end the growing season for most of the area, including Columbia, Aiken, and Sumter.

Residents should prepare now by covering or bringing in sensitive plants and ensuring outdoor pets and pipes are protected. Dry and seasonably cool weather will continue through midweek after the front passes.
