Midland, Texas – A magnitude 2.7 earthquake rattled parts of Midland County on Thursday afternoon, with reports of light shaking across the region. The quake struck about 14 kilometers north-northwest of Midland at a depth of 7 kilometers, according to the Texas Seismological Network (TexNet).

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the tremor occurred at 2 p.m. CDT and registered as “lightly felt” by several residents who reported it online. While the quake was not strong enough to cause damage, it was noticeable in northern Midland and nearby communities.

Small earthquakes have become increasingly common in West Texas in recent years, often linked to oil and gas activity in the Permian Basin. Thursday’s event is part of a series of low-level tremors that scientists continue to monitor for changes in intensity and frequency.

No injuries or structural damage were reported. Emergency management officials remind residents that even minor quakes can be unsettling and encourage securing heavy objects in homes and workplaces as a precaution.

Seismologists will continue reviewing seismic data, and additional information may be released if aftershocks occur.
