Midland & Bay Counties, MI – Drivers and commuters across parts of mid-Michigan could face slick and hazardous conditions Tuesday morning as freezing rain moves into the region.

According to the National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac office, a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Midland and Bay counties, effective Tuesday from 1 a.m. to 1 p.m. Light freezing rain is expected to develop early in the morning as a warm front lifts into southeast Michigan.

Forecasters say ice accumulations up to one-tenth of an inch are possible in the advisory area, especially in locations where temperatures remain near or just below 32 degrees the longest. This could lead to icy roads, bridges, sidewalks, and untreated surfaces, particularly during the morning commute.

Elsewhere across southeast Michigan — including areas south toward Detroit, Oakland County, and Wayne County — a brief period of freezing rain or a wintry mix may occur early Tuesday before temperatures climb above freezing and precipitation changes over to plain rain.

The National Weather Service notes confidence is highest for slick travel conditions in Midland and Bay counties, where temperatures are expected to rise more slowly. Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time Tuesday morning.

Residents are also advised to use caution when walking outdoors, as driveways, stairs, and sidewalks may become icy with little warning.

Conditions are expected to improve later Tuesday as temperatures rise above freezing, reducing the threat of additional ice accumulation.
