Nashville, Tennessee – A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for much of Middle Tennessee from midnight tonight through Sunday evening, with heavy snow, sleet, and significant ice expected to create dangerous and potentially crippling conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Nashville, total snow and sleet accumulations up to 6 inches are possible, along with ice accretion ranging from one-tenth to three-quarters of an inch. The warning covers a broad portion of Middle Tennessee, including Nashville, Clarksville, Murfreesboro, Franklin, Cookeville, Gallatin, Lebanon, Columbia, Shelbyville, Tullahoma, and surrounding communities.

The storm is expected to begin after midnight Friday night and continue through 6 p.m. CST Sunday. Forecasters warn that the combination of snow, sleet, and especially ice could make travel impossible at times, while the weight of ice on trees and power lines may result in power outages and structural damage.

Road conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly once precipitation begins, particularly on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Hazardous conditions could persist throughout the weekend as freezing temperatures limit melting.

Emergency officials urge residents to avoid travel if possible. Those who must be on the road are advised to carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight, in case they become stranded. Up-to-date road conditions can be obtained by dialing 511 from within Tennessee or neighboring states.

Residents are encouraged to prepare for extended impacts, including possible power interruptions, and to monitor official updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency management agencies as the storm develops.
