Nashville, TN – Residents across Middle Tennessee, especially the southwestern counties, should prepare for a heightened risk of severe weather Friday afternoon into the evening, as strong storms are expected to develop and move through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Nashville, areas including Columbia, Lawrenceburg, Waynesboro, and surrounding communities are under a Slight Risk for severe storms on Friday, January 9, with threats increasing later in the day. The primary concerns include damaging straight-line winds exceeding 50 mph and heavy rainfall, which could lead to localized flooding.

Forecasters also note that while the tornado risk is lower, an isolated tornado is possible, particularly if storms intensify quickly during the afternoon and evening hours. The timing of the strongest storms is expected after noon through early nighttime, coinciding with peak travel and commuting hours for many residents.

Much of Middle Tennessee falls under either a Marginal or Slight Risk, meaning not everyone will experience severe weather, but storms that do develop could become strong rapidly. Areas farther east are expected to see less intense impacts, though conditions may still become unsettled.

Emergency officials urge residents to stay weather-aware, especially those living in mobile homes or flood-prone areas. Having multiple ways to receive weather alerts, including NOAA Weather Radio and smartphone notifications, is strongly recommended.

Drivers should also remain cautious, as sudden downpours and gusty winds may reduce visibility and make road conditions hazardous during the evening hours.

Weather conditions will continue to be monitored throughout the day, and updates may be issued as the storm system evolves.
