Nashville, TN — A strong cold front will sweep through Middle Tennessee on Wednesday, ushering in frigid temperatures for the start of 2025. Residents should prepare for daytime highs in the low 40s and overnight lows dropping into the teens by week’s end.

According to the National Weather Service, the normal high for Nashville on New Year’s Day is 49°F, but this year, it will struggle to reach 43°F. Wind gusts of up to 25 mph will make conditions feel even colder, particularly in open areas and along highways like I-40 and I-65. Drivers are urged to bundle up and allow extra time for their commutes due to reduced visibility from windblown dust and fog in some areas.

The chill deepens as the week progresses, with temperatures expected to drop below freezing each night. Crossville, located east of Nashville, may see lows around 28°F, while rural areas could dip into the mid-teens by Friday night. The National Weather Service’s 8-14 day outlook predicts colder-than-normal conditions lingering into mid-January, though no major snow or Arctic outbreaks are forecast.

Residents are encouraged to take precautions, including winterizing homes and vehicles and checking on vulnerable neighbors and pets. Despite the cold, sunny skies on Thursday and Friday offer relief, with minimal precipitation in the forecast.

For those planning outdoor New Year’s Day events, dressing warmly and limiting time outdoors is essential. Stay tuned for updated forecasts and safety tips as the cold spell continues.
