Memphis, Tennessee – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for a large portion of the Mid-South as a prolonged period of snow, sleet, and ice is expected to impact the region this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, the watch is in effect from Friday afternoon, Jan. 23, through Sunday afternoon, Jan. 25, 2026, covering parts of East Arkansas, North Mississippi, Southeast Missouri, and West Tennessee, including the Memphis metropolitan area.

Forecasters say areas north of the Tennessee–Mississippi state line could see snow and sleet totals greater than 3 inches, along with ice accumulations up to one-quarter inch. Areas south of the state line may receive more than 2 inches of snow and sleet, with ice accumulations exceeding one-quarter inch, increasing the risk of infrastructure damage.

Ice buildup on trees and power lines may result in power outages and tree damage, particularly where freezing rain persists for extended periods. The National Weather Service warns that travel could be impossible at times, with hazardous road conditions expected to develop quickly.

The timing of the system could also impact the Friday evening commute, especially as precipitation spreads across the region Friday afternoon and evening. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads are expected to be especially dangerous.

Residents are urged to monitor forecast updates closely as the storm track and precipitation types become more certain. Emergency officials advise limiting travel during the watch period and preparing for potential power disruptions.

Those who must travel are encouraged to carry emergency supplies, including blankets, extra clothing, water, a flashlight, and a fully charged mobile device.

Forecasters emphasize that impacts may vary by location and that additional watches, warnings, or advisories could be issued as confidence increases.
