Paducah, Kentucky – Unseasonably warm January air settling across the Mid-South is setting the stage for a potential round of severe thunderstorms on Friday, with impacts possible from Louisiana north through Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, and much of western and central Kentucky. While the exact strength and placement of storms remains uncertain, the setup is drawing attention due to the unusual warmth and increasing instability for this time of year.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a multi-day stretch of above-normal temperatures will continue through the workweek, helping fuel at least some risk for strong to severe storms by Friday. The Storm Prediction Center highlights a broad zone of concern stretching from the lower Mississippi Valley into the Tennessee and Ohio valleys, with damaging winds as the primary threat at this stage.

In Kentucky, western counties including McCracken, Graves, Marshall, and Calloway may see the highest risk window Friday afternoon into Friday night. Tennessee could see storms develop from Memphis east toward Nashville, while northern Mississippi and eastern Arkansas may experience storms earlier in the day. Heavy downpours, gusty winds, and isolated power disruptions are possible if stronger storms develop.

Residents are urged to review severe weather safety plans, ensure weather alerts are enabled, and secure loose outdoor items ahead of Friday. Forecasters emphasize that details will become clearer as the week progresses, and additional advisories may be issued.
