Clarksdale, Mississippi – Life-threatening heat is bearing down on the Delta this Thursday, with heat index values reaching a staggering 114 degrees across parts of Mississippi and eastern Arkansas, triggering an Extreme Heat Warning until 9 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, dangerously hot and humid conditions will persist through this evening, especially in Coahoma, Tunica, Quitman, Tallahatchie, and Panola counties in Mississippi, along with Cross, Lee, Phillips, and St. Francis counties in Arkansas. Residents in Clarksdale, Batesville, Helena-West Helena, Wynne, and Forrest City should avoid outdoor activity, as heat-related illnesses are expected to surge.

Local officials urge everyone to stay indoors with air conditioning, hydrate frequently, and check on vulnerable relatives and neighbors. City cooling centers in Clarksdale and Helena-West Helena have extended hours, while several schools in Panola County have postponed outdoor sports. Power grids may be strained during peak afternoon hours—charge mobile devices and limit energy use where possible.

This marks one of the region’s highest July heat index events since 2021, with the worst conditions expected from late morning through sunset. Emergency services remain on high alert for heat stroke and dehydration calls.

Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. Further advisories or service interruptions may follow if temperatures persist.
