Memphis, Tennessee – Drivers across Memphis should brace for a mix of severe thunderstorms and dangerous heat as a series of storms targets the region through Wednesday night, threatening travel and outdoor plans across Shelby County.

According to the National Weather Service, scattered showers and thunderstorms will likely move into Memphis late this afternoon, with the highest chances between 4 and 5 p.m. Heat index values could reach a stifling 102°F, making outdoor activities risky. Storms may continue overnight, bringing heavy downpours, lightning, and the potential for localized flooding, especially on I-40 and I-55.

On Wednesday, another round of storms is expected with rain chances peaking at 70% by afternoon. Commuters should watch for sudden downpours and possible delays along Poplar Avenue, Sam Cooper Boulevard, and routes near the Mississippi River. Evening storms could bring additional heavy rainfall and gusty winds, making driving hazardous into the night.

Residents are urged to limit time outside during peak heat, stay weather-aware for possible severe thunderstorm warnings, and secure outdoor items. Power outages and minor flooding are possible, especially in low-lying neighborhoods and near Wolf River.

Storms will likely taper off by Thursday, but temperatures are expected to remain in the mid-90s. More advisories could follow as the week progresses, so check local updates and be prepared for changing conditions.
