Memphis, Tenn. – Memphis remains under an Extreme Heat Warning until 8 p.m. Tuesday, with temperatures pushing 102 degrees and a heat index as high as 114. The oppressive heat has already settled across much of western Tennessee, creating dangerous conditions for outdoor workers, travelers, and vulnerable residents.
According to the National Weather Service, thunderstorms could begin popping up Tuesday afternoon, offering brief relief but bringing the risk of heavy downpours and gusty winds. A 30 to 40 percent chance of storms will continue into Tuesday night before conditions settle into a hot and partly cloudy stretch midweek.
The Tennessee Department of Health is urging residents to avoid outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and check on elderly neighbors. Cooling centers remain open across Memphis and Shelby County, where overnight lows will only fall into the upper 70s, limiting recovery from daytime heat.
Wednesday may see scattered showers and thunderstorms, but high temperatures are still expected to climb into the mid-90s with heat index values topping 102. The risk of heat-related illness will remain elevated until cooler, slightly drier air filters in late week.
Warnings remain in effect, and officials caution more alerts may follow if heat persists into the weekend.
