Memphis, TN – A marginal risk for severe storms is in place across parts of Tennessee on Tuesday, September 23, with damaging winds being the primary concern.

According to the US National Weather Service Memphis, the storms are expected to be isolated but could still bring hazards to communities in western Tennessee, northern Mississippi, and eastern Arkansas. The outlook highlights Shelby County, the greater Memphis metro area, and surrounding counties as areas of concern.

Forecasters say storms are most likely to form during the day Tuesday and could include periods of heavy rain in addition to damaging winds. The Storm Prediction Center classifies the threat level as “Marginal” (Level 1 of 5), which indicates storms may be limited in coverage but could still pose risks if they develop.

Travelers and commuters should prepare for changing conditions, especially on highways such as I-40 and I-55 through Memphis. The National Weather Service urges residents to monitor forecasts closely as the timing and severity of the storms may shift closer to Tuesday.

While the risk is lower than higher-tier storm outlooks, residents are reminded that even marginal severe storms can cause localized damage and delays. Outdoor plans may need to be adjusted depending on how the weather develops.
