Memphis, TN – Severe thunderstorms are set to hit Memphis and surrounding areas today, with a high flood threat, the possibility of strong tornadoes, and extreme weather conditions expected through the night and into Saturday morning.
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch in effect until 7:00 AM Sunday, with a forecast for widespread severe storms this afternoon through the early hours of Saturday. According to weather experts, the storms will bring dangerous conditions, including gusty winds reaching up to 60 mph, large hail up to 2 inches in diameter, and the potential for strong tornadoes. The storms are expected to begin around 1 PM and continue until about 3 AM Saturday. The area under the highest risk includes Memphis and much of the surrounding Mid-South region, particularly to the north and east.
Officials warn residents to be prepared for life-threatening conditions, urging everyone to remain weather-aware as the storms approach. “This is a very serious situation,” said the National Weather Service in a statement. “These storms are capable of producing large hail, destructive winds, and significant flooding.” With some areas experiencing heavy rainfall, local flooding concerns remain elevated, especially with anticipated rainfall amounts between 2 to 3 inches.
The severe weather is expected to intensify overnight into Saturday, with a 90% chance of thunderstorms through Friday night. Emergency management officials are advising the public to stay informed and take shelter if needed. Additional warnings and updates will be provided throughout the day as the storms develop.
For those in flood-prone areas, it’s critical to avoid travel and remain indoors during the heaviest rain. Storms will likely be accompanied by lightning, and power outages are possible.
