Memphis, Tennessee – Isolated severe thunderstorms are expected across west Tennessee and the Mid-South this afternoon, threatening damaging winds and heavy rainfall between 2 and 9 p.m. Sunday. Motorists around Memphis, Jackson, and Jonesboro should be prepared for sudden downpours and gusts up to 60 mph as storms move from west to east.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, today’s main hazards include strong winds, brief periods of heavy rain, and limited flooding concerns. While damaging hail and tornadoes are not expected, drivers should watch for ponding water and possible power outages, especially on area highways and in flood-prone neighborhoods.

City-specific risks:

  • Memphis & Jackson: Up to 40% chance of storms by evening; heat index values already in the mid-90s.
  • Jonesboro & Kennett: Winds could down tree limbs or power lines—use caution on I-55 and local roads.
  • Tupelo & Oxford: Isolated storms could linger past sunset with quick rainfall totals.

For safety, avoid outdoor activities during peak storm hours, charge mobile devices, and never drive through flooded roadways. As the storms pass, heat and humidity will build. By midweek, apparent temperatures could soar to 100–105°F, with the highest risk in Memphis, Oxford, and Kennett.

Warnings remain in effect through 9 p.m. tonight. Stay tuned for additional advisories as heat risks increase by Wednesday.
