Memphis, Tennessee – A high-impact winter storm is expected to bring dangerous ice, snow, and strong winds to the Mid-South beginning Friday evening, creating the potential for widespread power outages and nearly impossible travel through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 6 p.m. Friday until 6 p.m. Sunday for portions of east Arkansas, north Mississippi, and west Tennessee. The warning includes the Memphis metro area and surrounding communities such as Collierville, Germantown, Bartlett, Millington, West Memphis, Southaven, Olive Branch, Jackson, and Forrest City. Snow and sleet accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are expected, along with ice accumulations ranging from two-tenths to one-half of an inch. Wind gusts could reach 35 mph, increasing the risk of damage.
Statewide and regional impacts are expected to be severe where ice builds on trees and power lines. Utility crews are preparing for the likelihood of widespread and potentially long-lasting power outages. Roads are expected to become treacherous quickly, especially bridges and overpasses along Interstate 40, Interstate 55, U.S. Highway 78, and U.S. Highway 51.
In the Memphis area, emergency officials urge residents to avoid all non-essential travel, charge electronic devices, and prepare for extended periods without power. Gusty winds may worsen conditions by bringing down ice-laden branches and lines.
The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through Sunday evening, with hazardous conditions likely to linger beyond the storm’s end. Residents should monitor local alerts closely and check road conditions by calling 511 before attempting any travel.
