Memphis, Tennessee – Heat grips the Mid-South Wednesday as a Heat Advisory goes into effect for Memphis, Jackson, Tupelo, and surrounding areas, with heat indices soaring to 110°F by the afternoon. Residents should brace for dangerously high temperatures and take extra precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, the advisory runs from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and covers a broad region, including cities like Jonesboro, Forrest City, Holly Springs, and Oxford. Forecasters warn that heat illness is a real risk, especially without proper hydration or if exposed to the sun for extended periods.

In Memphis and the surrounding metro, public cooling centers will be open as officials urge everyone to take frequent breaks indoors or in air conditioning. Those who must work outside should avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, drink water regularly, and never leave children or pets in vehicles. Light-colored, loose-fitting clothing is also recommended.

Wednesday’s heat will impact travel, outdoor plans, and school sports practices from north Mississippi to northeast Arkansas. The National Weather Service advises that more advisories could follow if conditions persist or worsen into Thursday.

Warnings remain in effect until 9 p.m. Wednesday. Stay tuned to local weather updates for any changes.
