Memphis, TN – The Mid-South is expected to experience a surge of Arctic air from December 12 through December 16, bringing sharply colder temperatures and potentially hazardous wind chills, according to the National Weather Service in St. Louis.

Forecasters say there is a 60–80% probability of below-normal temperatures across Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and western Kentucky, marking the coldest air of the season so far. Highs may struggle to reach the 30s and low 40s, while overnight lows plunge into the teens and 20s.

The NWS advises residents to wrap exposed pipes, bring pets indoors, and check on elderly neighbors during the cold spell. Gusty winds could make conditions feel significantly colder, with wind chills dipping into the teens or even single digits in some areas by early next week.

The Arctic pattern is expected to persist through midweek before gradually moderating late next week, though another cold surge may follow later in December.
