Memphis, Tenn. – Much-needed rain will move back into the Mid-South late tonight, bringing widespread showers and the chance of thunderstorms through Friday morning. Some locations in east Arkansas and northwest Mississippi could pick up between one and two inches of rainfall.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, the first round of showers will develop after midnight with heavier rainfall building toward sunrise Friday. A few thunderstorms may mix in, but the primary impact will be steady rain lasting into the early afternoon.
Communities from Forrest City, Ark., to Clarksdale, Miss., should prepare for ponding on roadways during the Friday morning commute. Drivers are urged to slow down and allow extra time for travel, especially along Interstates 40 and 55 where wet pavement could reduce visibility.
While rain is welcome after several dry weeks across the Mid-South, localized flooding in low-lying areas remains possible. Residents are advised to clear storm drains where safe and avoid driving through standing water.
Showers will taper off Friday evening, but forecasters note additional rounds of rain may develop into the weekend, keeping soils damp and streams elevated.
