MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The air feels crisp and still across the Mid-South this morning — calm enough that the first light glints off rooftops, but heavy clouds already hint at change. For those hitting the highways home after Thanksgiving, that calm won’t last long. Wet roads and gusty winds are on the way as a fast-moving system sweeps through the region Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, clouds will increase this evening, followed by scattered showers by early Saturday morning. The heaviest rain is expected from midmorning through early afternoon, with winds gusting near 25 mph along I-40 and I-55, making travel slower and slick. A few rumbles of thunder are possible, though severe weather is not expected.

By Saturday night, cooler air filters in from the northwest as rain tapers off. Sunday will feel noticeably different — crisp, dry, and breezy, with highs near 40°F and low humidity returning. Temperatures dip again Sunday night, and early December begins with another chance of showers Monday into Tuesday as a cold front deepens across the Mississippi Valley.

Meteorologists say this weekend marks the start of a colder December pattern, with below-normal temperatures likely through the first week of the month. Residents are encouraged to check vehicle fluids, keep jackets and umbrellas close, and allow extra time for Saturday errands or return travel.

Winter’s not here yet — but its preview is starting to show.
