Memphis, TN – The Mid-South has experienced a historic spike in tornado activity in 2025, with 53 confirmed twisters in the Memphis region through May 13—setting a new record for the area.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, this surpasses the previous high of 52 tornadoes recorded in 2021. The agency noted the confirmed tornadoes span the NWS Memphis County Warning Area, which covers parts of western Tennessee, northern Mississippi, and eastern Arkansas.
Meteorologists have tracked tornadoes across multiple counties, including Fayette, Tipton, and Shelby in Tennessee, as well as DeSoto and Marshall counties in Mississippi. Tornado strengths have ranged from EF0 to EF3, based on the Enhanced Fujita Scale.
Officials advise residents to remain alert as the region moves further into peak tornado season. Emergency management agencies urge families to review safety plans and have NOAA weather radios ready.
Historically, the Mid-South sees most tornado activity from March through June. This early surge in 2025 raises concerns about what the remainder of the year may bring.
NWS Memphis reminds the public to seek shelter in a basement or interior room during warnings and to avoid traveling during severe weather alerts.
