Memphis, TN – Residents across the Mid-South are urged to stay weather-aware this weekend as a developing storm system brings the threat of heavy rainfall and scattered flash flooding across portions of the Ohio Valley, Tennessee Valley, and Lower Mississippi Valley.

According to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, a strengthening low-pressure system is expected to move across the central U.S. late this week, focusing multiple rounds of rain from Friday into Saturday. Forecast models show several inches of rain possible in a short period, increasing the risk of rapid runoff and flash flooding, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

The heaviest rainfall is expected to stretch from southern Ohio through western and middle Tennessee and into northern Mississippi and eastern Arkansas. Urban areas, small creeks, and locations with saturated ground from prior rainfall could see water levels rise quickly.

Meteorologists warn that while flooding may be localized, even brief downpours could overwhelm drainage systems. Roads that frequently flood, underpasses, and rural crossings are particularly vulnerable. Officials emphasize that conditions can change rapidly during flash flooding events.

Drivers are reminded never to attempt to cross flooded roadways. Just a few inches of fast-moving water can sweep a vehicle away. Emergency managers stress the importance of the message: “Turn around, don’t drown.”

Rainfall intensity is expected to taper off late Saturday night into Sunday as the system moves east, but lingering high water could remain in some areas into the start of next week.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts, enable weather alerts, and have multiple ways to receive warnings, especially overnight. If you live in a flood-prone area, review your safety plan now and be prepared to act quickly if warnings are issued.
