MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis residents will face unhealthy air Friday as a Code Orange Ozone Alert goes into effect, paired with rising heat near 95 degrees. The alert covers Shelby County, along with Crittenden County in Arkansas and DeSoto County in Mississippi.

According to the Shelby County Health Department, ozone levels are expected to exceed federal safety standards, creating conditions dangerous for sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and those with asthma or other respiratory conditions. The agency advises limiting prolonged outdoor activity and staying indoors during peak afternoon hours.

The hot and stagnant air fueling ozone concerns will also drive temperatures into the mid-90s Friday through early next week. Memphis International Airport is expected to see highs of 95 Friday, 96 Saturday, and a sweltering 97 by Monday. Nights will bring little relief, with lows holding around 70.

Residents should monitor updates at AirNow.gov and take precautions such as reducing time outside, especially during late afternoon. The alert remains in effect through Friday evening, with additional warnings possible if ozone levels remain elevated.
