Albany, N.Y. – Drivers and residents south of Albany should prepare for possible flash flooding by Thursday afternoon as a heavy rain system moves into the region, bringing 1 to 3 inches of rainfall through early Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, confidence is growing for a period of locally heavy rain starting Thursday and continuing into Friday morning, with the highest rainfall totals expected across areas just south and east of Albany. Flash flood watches may be issued as conditions evolve.
Before the rain arrives, much of eastern New York will face another hot and humid day Wednesday, with isolated to widely scattered thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. The strongest storms are expected from the Catskills through the Mid-Hudson Valley into Litchfield County, Connecticut, where gusty winds and localized downpours could occur.
Travelers on I-87 and Route 9 should monitor conditions closely Thursday night, especially in flood-prone zones. Residents are urged to clear drains, secure outdoor belongings, and prepare for brief power outages. Urban and poor drainage areas are particularly vulnerable to flooding.
The rain threat persists through early Friday, with more alerts possible as models update. Stay tuned for changes from the National Weather Service.
