Baltimore, MD – A strong cold front is expected to sweep through the Mid-Atlantic region Friday morning, bringing powerful winds that could cause travel issues, power outages, and property damage throughout the day.
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington, strong to potentially damaging winds will develop behind the cold front on Friday. Wind Advisories, High Wind Watches, and a Gale Warning have been issued for parts of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
Forecasts show maximum wind gusts between 40 and 55 mph across much of the region, with higher gusts possible in the mountains of western Maryland and eastern West Virginia, including areas near Garrett County, Allegany County, and the Allegheny Front. Gusts of 45 to near 50 mph are also expected across the I-95 corridor, including Baltimore, Washington, DC, and surrounding suburbs.
Forecasters warn that unsecured outdoor objects such as trash bins, holiday decorations, and lightweight furniture may be blown around, and high-profile vehicles could experience difficult driving conditions, especially on bridges and exposed roadways. Tree limbs may come down, leading to isolated to scattered power outages.
The strongest winds are expected Friday morning through Friday afternoon, gradually easing Friday evening as the system moves east.
Residents are urged to secure loose items, use caution while driving, and stay alert for falling debris. Those in wind-prone mountain areas should prepare for potentially stronger and more disruptive gusts.
