Washington, DC – Scorching heat and dangerous storms will grip the DC region Friday as a Heat Advisory remains in effect through 7 p.m., posing a threat to health and travel from northern Virginia through central Maryland.

According to the National Weather Service, heat index values could soar to 107 degrees east of the Blue Ridge, with scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms likely to follow. Some storms may bring damaging wind gusts and large hail, particularly between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday.

Residents across Washington, DC, Arlington, Alexandria, Baltimore, and along I-95, Route 50, and the Beltway should plan for limited outdoor activity, hydrate often, and avoid peak afternoon exertion. Anyone without air conditioning is urged to seek cooling centers or shaded spaces.

Friday’s storm threat continues into the evening, with locally heavy rain possible through midnight. Light winds may shift suddenly with storm movement, making travel hazardous, especially on highly trafficked corridors like I-66 and I-270.

Looking ahead, Saturday and Sunday remain steamy, with highs in the lower 90s and scattered afternoon storms each day. Showers and thunderstorms are likely again Monday and Tuesday, especially during the late afternoon.
