Baltimore, Maryland – Tropical Storm Andrea is not expected to impact the Mid-Atlantic, but as the first named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, it’s a clear signal that hurricane prep time has arrived.

According to the National Weather Service Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center, Andrea formed Tuesday morning in the central Atlantic and is moving east-northeast at 17 mph with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. While the storm remains far from the U.S. coastline, officials stress that its early formation is a reminder for residents in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and surrounding states to review emergency plans and supply kits.

Though no watches or warnings are in effect for the East Coast, forecasters say conditions can change quickly during peak hurricane months. Coastal cities like Ocean City, Virginia Beach, and Rehoboth Beach are urged to monitor updates and prepare for future systems.

Now is the time to stock up on essentials, check flood insurance policies, and know local evacuation routes. “Don’t wait until a storm is on your doorstep,” NWS officials warned Tuesday.

More Atlantic activity is expected in the coming weeks. Residents should stay informed via weather.gov as hurricane season ramps up through November.
