Maryland – Wet pavement glistens under low clouds this morning, but a sharper winter edge is closing in fast. Light rain moves through early, then colder air surges south. By tonight, temperatures drop quickly, setting the stage for a mid-January freeze.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, rain develops today with highs near the low 50s. As colder air arrives this evening, precipitation may briefly mix with snow before ending. Little to no accumulation is expected, but the timing matters. Roads damp from rain could refreeze late tonight as temperatures slide into the 20s.

The highest risk window runs late tonight through early Thursday morning. Bridges, ramps, and untreated roads along I-95, I-83, and the Baltimore Beltway could turn slick. Drivers heading out before sunrise should slow down and allow extra braking distance.

Thursday turns brighter but much colder. Sunshine returns, yet highs struggle to reach the low 30s. Gusty northwest winds make it feel colder, especially near the harbor and open areas. Thursday night remains cold, with lows near 20 and patchy refreeze concerns lingering into early Friday.

Friday offers modest improvement. Skies stay mostly sunny, and highs rebound into the mid-30s. Even so, winter holds firm heading into the weekend. Saturday brings another chance of rain or snow showers, with highs in the mid-40s. Any late-day precipitation could again refreeze after sunset.

Looking ahead to Jan. 19–23, NOAA outlooks suggest colder-than-normal temperatures persist across the Mid-Atlantic, while precipitation chances increase next week. That keeps winter hazards firmly in play.

Heading out early tomorrow or traveling tonight? Expect temperatures to fall fast. Are roads slick where you live?
